MST Competition Schedule
The Grissom Military Skills Team in the past has won many competitions and taken 1st female and 2nd in male at the National Raider meet. This year we are training vigorously to take the gold in not only male and female but co-ed as well. This year we have four meets to compete at: Sterans, Soddy Daisy, Cedars, and Nationals.
One of the hardest varsity sports across the country, this team is the JROTC equivalent of a Ranger Challenge team which is found at most college level ROTC units in the United States. It is a physically challenging sport that consists of usually an 8 person team. The events are usually Cross Country Rescue, One Rope Bridge, Obstacle Course, Physical Training Test, and Ranger challenge. Military Skills is open to any one willing to try their best.
Cross Country Rescue involves carrying various equipment over obstacles in the quickest time possible. The most common equipment carried are a 150-250 pound stretcher, ammunition cans, ammunition crates, large water drums, and rubber rifles.
The One Rope Bridge event's objective is to create a rope bridge across a river or ditch using one 150ft. rope and two support trees. It is done by using knots and climbing clips in the one rope to secure a person safely across to the other side.
The Obstacle Course/Ranger Challenge contains different challenges to test a team's agility and strength. The most common obstacles are a grenade toss, climbing over different sized walls, a 20 ft. rope climb, and balance beams. The obstacles can vary from competition to competition.
The Physical Training Test measures the strength and endurance of a team. Most competitions go by the Army standards for the physical training test. To achieve a perfect score (300), a male must do 72 push ups in 2 minutes, 78 sit ups in 2 minutes, and complete a 2 mile run under 13 minutes. A maximum of 100 points is given to each event, totaling 300 points. A female must do 42 push ups in 2 minutes, 78 sit ups in 2 minutes, and run 2 miles in under 15:35. If a person achieves a perfect score in all 3 areas, the score is moved to the extended scale where each extra repetition or time is added to the score.
