: Rifle Team Information
The Grissom Rifle Team last year competed in and won many competitions. This year we will be competing in 12 local matches and will compete n many National matches. The Team will also go to Anniston, AL once a month for practice in a National Air Rifle Range. Our first large match will be October 17th at Montgomery Bell Academy. We will take 2 teams and one will include some of our new shooters!
Grissom JROTC hosts three varsity athletic events, one of which is the Rifle Team. The Rifle Team is an individually cadet centered activity requiring physical and mental discipline. The cadet competes against himself each time to better his last score.
This requires mental concentration, adherence to demanding physical parameters, and unfailing adherence to range and safety rules.
In actual numbers of participants, the Rifle Team is much smaller in comparison to the other JROTC varsity sports. Both the Varsity and Junior Varsity Rifle Teams consists of six members each. The limiting factor is that the range allows only six members at a time to shoot. The Varsity Team shoots during seventh period, the Junior Varsity shoots from 3:30 to 4:30 after school. The schedule varies prior to a competition to permit more range time for Varsity members.
The rifles used are expensive and accurate. They are provided by the JROTC program. Range and safety rules are strictly enforced. The rifles, even though the projectile is discharged by compressed air, are potentially hazardous. No safety violations are tolerated. Each cadet is required to successfully complete a mandated safety test. Cadets are supervised by a JROTC Instructor at all times on the range facility.
The Grissom JROTC Rifle Team took First in the North Alabama Rifle League, Second place at the State Three Position Air Rifle Competition, First at the State Junior Olympics, and was invited to participate at the National Junior Olympics at Camp Perry Ohio. The members are dedicated, disciplined, and very talented. The standards are high and the competitions extremely competitive.
Any cadet may attend try outs for the rifle team. Prior experience in shooting is not a prerequisite. Cadets will be taught safety procedures, positions, rifle operation, and when proficient be allowed to shoot. Members are selected based on their score.
